A new green space has been completed and is now open to residents and their families. An area that was once inaccessible—with concrete stairs descending a full story—has been filled in with dirt taken from the excavation for the new building to create a lovely green space.
It will be named after Dorsey and Phyllis Harris. Dorsey was the first maintenance director at Northaven and later served many years on the Board of Trustees. Phyllis loved to garden. They left their entire estate to Northaven, and a portion of it has been used as the major source of funding for the new green space.
Ginger Blake, Life Enrichment Coordinator, planned a wonderful garden party for the grand opening. Residents bought tickets to be the first person to step on the new grass. The money went toward a tile to help fund the new space. The winner was Martha Kelly, our oldest resident, who had just turned 100. Residents were able to enjoy the new garden, soft-serve ice cream cones and live music.
Martha Kelly, our oldest resident at age 100, was the first to step on the new grass.
The garden is a welcome green space since the famous North 40 has been completely taken over as the staging ground for our new construction project and will stay that way as another building project begins in March.
In addition to the Dorsey and Phyllis Harris Estate, this project has been made possible through a $10,000 gift from Board of Trustee member Sarajane Siegfriedt, the Fund-a-Need at last year’s virtual gala, and our ongoing Fund our Garden: Tile Campaign (please see details below).
Tile campaign continues
Our new garden is open. Residents and their guests are enjoying the final days of fall walking on the path or sitting on new benches. Or just sitting and taking in the fresh outdoors in the midst of our growing urban environment.
We are still, however, in the process of paying for its construction and you can still help.
YOU CAN HELP IT HAPPEN!
Buy a tile. The bricks will be attached to the wall of Northaven, and landscaping will draw attention to the wall. Your tile can honor the memory of a loved one. It can memorialize a birth or a wedding. It can bear your own name.
